Strainers and filters are designed to remove unwanted particulates from a liquid or gas.
The key difference between strainers and filters are the size of the particles they remove.
Filters remove smaller particles than strainers.

The key difference between filter and strainer, please check the following table.
difference | filter | strainer |
function | traps the valuable substance and lets the waste flow through the system. | traps debris and allows the valuable liquid to flow through the system. |
usage | remove small particles, generally particles smaller than 40 microns. | catch large particles, generally particles larger than 40 microns. |
type of operation | fine operation | coarse operation |
pressure drop | liquid or gas passing through a filter experience a pressure drop. | liquid or gas passing through a strainer does not experience a pressure drop. |
re-usage | cannot used again | can be cleaned and used again |
