In the woven wire industry, the term mesh count indicates the density of the wire weave.

The 1-Inch Ruler Test: If you lay a standard physical ruler onto our 40 Mesh screen, you will count exactly 40 square openings (holes) per linear inch (25.4 mm).

Because the mesh count remains fixed at 40, the actual aperture size (hole clearance) and open area percentage depend on the wire diameter used. Thicker wires provide stronger mechanical resistance but smaller openings, while thinner wires optimize the open area for high-flow gas or liquid filtration.
